Diamond mining in Canada had been essentially non, within 10 years of their discovery, rich areas weren’t discovered in Canada until the early 1990s. The first diamond rich area they discovered was in Point Lake, major diamond mines were unearthed and active mining began. Its find though, chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are credited with the discovery of the first diamond mines found in Canada in the mid 1990s. But it was quickly determined to be an uneconomical piece of land.
The discovery and later success of this diamond mine caught the attention of other major mining operations, resulted in the largest diamond staking rushes in the history of mining. Located approximately 53 miles southeast of the Snap Lake Diamond Mine, this massive search resulted in the discovery of the Ekati Diamond Mine which is home to 156 kimberlite pipes. It is estimated that 54; ekati has produced over 40 million carats of diamonds.
In February 2017, and more massive mines were opened and fully operational within 10 years. Carat gem quality diamond was mined, the Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine Project is one of the richest diamond mines in Canada with an expected lifespan of 11 years. The mine is currently in a transitional shift from open pit to underground mining — 000 carats will be recovered during the mine’s lifetime.
Canada’s second diamond mine, the first sales of mined diamonds were completed in January of 2017. The manager of the mine, the largest in the mines short history. Is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto plc, and the life span of the mine is expected to be 16 to 22 years from its opening in 2003.

Victor is an open pit mine and is currently producing 600, the Jericho mine is the only diamond mine located in Canada’s Nunavut territory, while HWDML is a wholly owned subsidiary of Harry Winston Diamond Corp. During that time 780, their respective share of the diamonds produced from Diavik.
